In the wake of the Second World War, the British Raj created the Malir Cantonment as a Prisoner of War (PoW) Camp. However, following the independence of Pakistan, the army took over the camp and developed it at par with international standards — making it one of the most famous and sought-after localities in Karachi. The area falls under the administration of the Cantonment Board Malir, which itself comes under the supervision and jurisdiction of the Ministry of Defence. Moreover, the cantonment is autonomous and manages the area’s infrastructural development, including electricity, water supplies, and other administrative tasks. Malir Cantonment is one of the most secured areas of Karachi to live in. This gated community is home to several retired army officials and their families. Many serving army officials also have a residential abode here. However, the breakdown of the residents of Malir cantonment also contains bureaucrats — serving and retired, and civilians. All in all, Malir Cantonment is a well-established gated community that comes equipped with many world-class facilities and amenities, enabling its dwellers a chance to enjoy a complete and comfortable lifestyle.
